Medicare Plans in the Long Beach & Los Angeles Area

Before you randomly pick the first Medicare health plan you find, we highly recommend reaching out to one of our Medicare Insurance Agent that specializes in Medicare.

We have a very unique situation for our area (Long Beach, Los Angeles County, & Orange County) were the plan options are much broader than even Riverside County let alone another State.

For instance if you are relatively healthy and are considering a Medicare Advantage Plan, we could help you obtain a plan that covers $109 per month towards your Part B premium.   We spent several months investigating all available Medicare Advantage plan options and have found some pretty amazing plans for the 2021 plan year.  This plan may not be for everyone, but for many this is a great Medicare Advantage Plan choice.

Should I pick an HMO or a PPO Medicare Plan

The topic of an HMO verses a PPO Medicare Plan is one most people just don’t understand completely.  Many people believe that a PPO is the best choice as it gives you the flexability to going anywhere.

While this may be close to true it is important to remember the following:

  • You will typically pay a higher monthly premium for a PPO plan
  • If you visit a non network Doctor your cost sharing could be substantially increased.
  • Not all Doctors accept Medicare even with a PPO plan

If you are thinking about a Medicare Advantage Plan that is a PPO, we might have a better option for you.  For instance if you are in your guaranteed enrollment period we would highly recommend a Medicare Supplement Plan.  These plans offer some very attractive benefits verses a PPO style plan within a Medicare Advantage Plan.

If you are outside of your guaranteed issue period but your are pretty healthy a Medicare Supplement Plan may still be an option for you to consider.

It we decide that your health is going to be an issue and you will not qualify for a Medicare Supplement Plan only then do we start to consider another option.  At this point, we would recommend to our clients that we first try and find a Medicare Advantage HMO plan that will include most if not all of their must have Doctors and Hospitals.  As long as we can cover most if not all of your Doctors than they will typically pay substantially less (related to your monthly premiums and plan benefits) than a PPO plan.

How to sign up for Medicare

Medicare Advantage Plans require you to sign up for Both Medicare Part A & Part B

Before you can sign up for a Medicare Advantage Plan, you are required to sign up for both Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B

Once you have received your Medicare card showing that you have successfully enrolled into both Medicare Parts you then have the option of selecting a Medigap plan or Medicare Advantage plan.

For the Long Beach and Los Angeles California area most people opt to pick a Medicare Advantage plan as they feel these best serve them and their budget.

For those who might travel a lot and need the freedom and flexibility to see any Doctor who accepts Medicare a Medicare Supplement  or Medigap plan might be your best option.

The best time to make this decision about your Medicare plan options is when you sign up for both Part A and Part B.  This way you can make the choice verses the plans making the choice.

Remember once you are past your guaranteed issue period a Medicare Supplement may not be an option that the Medicare Carrier will allow you to sign up for.  If this is the case a Medicare Advantage plan could be your sole option.
