General Liability Insurance

Commercial general liability insurance, also known as general liability insurance provides coverage for your business againts third party claims of bodily injury, associated medical costs and damage to property.

We understand the risks your company faces and the importance of knowing your business is properly protected. Having general liability insurance coverage protects your business against third-party claims of bodily injury or damage to someone else’s property. However, it does not protect your own personal property or your employees.

If you are considering starting a small business one of the first things you will need  to purchase is general liability insurance coverage, also called commercial general liability insurance, if you or your employees:

  • Interact with clients face to face – If you visit a client’s place of work, or clients visit yours
  • Have access to a client’s equipment – For example, IT professionals should be covered against potential claims with IT business liability insurance
  • Represent your client’s business
  • Use third-party locations for any business related activities – For example, architects should make sure that they’re covered with architects business liability insurance
  • Are required to have general liability insurance policy before entering into a contract

Does your business have enough general liability coverage?

It is important as your insurance broker that we ask all of the needed questions to learn as much as we can about your business.  By asking you questions it helps us evaluate if the typical General liability coverage will be enough to protect your business.

The typical commercial general liability limits are:

  • $1,000,000 each occurrence
  • $2,000,000 aggregate limit
  • $1,000,000 products completed operations
  • $1,000,000 Personal Advertising Injury
  • $100,000 Damage to Rented Premises
  • $5,000 – Medical Expense (Any one person)

For some businesses purchasing an umbrella policy in additional to purchasing a General liability policy may be needed.

I always recommend that you try and make your insurance agent a business partner in respects that we understand what you believe is your greatest risk exposure.  However, we should also know the things that you feel are your smallest risk exposure as well.

What you might believe is a small risk exposure, we might have a different perspective based on previous claims we have dealt with.

Which insurance carrier provides the broadest general liability coverage?

It is important to know which insurance market your business is best matched with before you shop for general liability insurance. Those businesses that fall into the “excess surplus market” (i.e. “dangerous” occupations such as roofers, framers, etc.) have to purchase their general liability insurance through an excess surplus lines market.

If your business falls into the “standard market” (i.e. technology companies, lawyers, retail stores etc.) then you qualify for business owners insurance policy that will provide broader coverage at an affordable price.

As previously mentioned a General liability insurance protects your business from a variety of things.  In general terms it protects your company from third party losses associated with your company operations.

Typically, your insurance agent can create a customized policy for you to include different types and amounts of coverage.

Additional coverages that you may want to add to your standard general liability policy include::

  • Property Coverage / Building
  • Protection of your business’ personal property from:
    • Fire
    • Theft
    • Vandalism
  • Business Income and Interruptions
  • Directors & Officers
  • Employment Practice Liability
  • Employee Benefits Liability
  • Terrorism coverage
  • And more….

General Liability insurance protects a business from many liability issues, but business owners should also consider adding specialized liability coverage like errors & omissions insurance.  There are many exposures that your business may have that fall outside the normal coverage of a general liability policy that an errors & omissions policy will help protect your business from.
